Curator’s Comment:
The abstract painting entitled Metamorphosis is a lush, unrestrained piece. Appearing after it’s initial posting many years ago, I was drawn in by the organic configuration that is particularly concentrated in the center space, suggesting a more traditional figure-ground arrangement within. While searching for a recognizable subject to anchor the haptic marks, the viewer gets swept into the swelling movement of densely clustered shapes. The opening up of the pictorial ground around the perimeter of the composition breathes some air into the space, and provides visual rest. The high chroma yellow and orange hues add vibrancy to the contrasting darker green shapes, and compartmentalized areas of heavier impasto brushwork. While the piece doesn’t reveal metamorphosis in the sense of a distinct change from one state to another, there is a strong sense of turmoil that could generate transformation on a primal level. It is a real pleasure to view this image, and others on the site. I hope you will consider sharing your more recent works.
