Portfolios: Vessel Drawings, July 2013 Curator Reviewed Art
Comment
thanks you for your insight. As these are many drawings, it has been hard for me to strike a balance showing the power of the group while letting the individual pieces speak for them selves. I have a show coming up in August and your comments are very helpful.
Curator’s Comments:
It’s difficult to isolate a favorite piece in this series; I tend to like them best when taken in and experienced as a whole grouping. But I also respect they have a strangely impenetrable presence as somber, solitary forms. This boldly silhouetted shape flattens out the recognizable vessel, and presents the object as a duplicitous shield or obscurely agrarian tool. Number 26’s flint like graphite surface also resonates with the directionality of the arrowhead contour. I especially enjoy the faint contrasting color around the edges of the forms. The warm yellow around this piece is barely detectable at first glance, but warmth subtly seeps into the cooler and harder geometry. The ample white space around each of the drawings generally gives them enough room to breathe, and contemplate their function. Number 29, by comparison, has a more grounded presence. The smaller amount of space under the flattened bottom anchors the piece, and imposes a more obvious gravitational relationship. I feel the higher chroma color and handles also makes this vessel appear more whimsical and ornamental; its function less clandestine.
