Cloud and Pines was posted several years ago, but I’m happy to revisit the work today. The painting has an interesting way of making the voluminous clouds carry more visual weight than the darker earth below. I like that the rounded green horizon is mimicked in the curve of the cloud formations, and creates a vertical thrust to the horizontally oriented landscape. Stylistically, I see the painting as realistic, if not somewhat idealized. Despite the local color, including the robin’s egg blue sky, the environment appears more active that restful. Scale isn’t noted on the piece, and I’m curious if the physical size of the painting underscores the immense expanse of sky.
