Curator’s Comments:
The Choir was posted and therefore created several years ago -I remember being engaged with the rhythmic formalist qualities of your similar sculptural works on the site. Now The Choir resonates with me because of a more conceptual read. The extreme height of the piece in proportion to the gathering of small metallic heads suggests an “out of touch” personal relationship with the anchoring ground. Outward looking, the choir are visually unaware of each other, and yet their large open mouths project loudly and outward. The gold color of the work infuses the heads with an elemental awareness or possession of privilege. But of course I wonder if this reading of the piece has more to do with the viewer and conceptual social climate. It occurs to me that it’s just as likely the piece was intended to represent a traditional musical choir, and removed from all socio-political constructs.
