Curator’s Comment:
I usually like to see more than one piece by an artist before making any comment about their work, as it helps me gather a sense of what they’re trying to say. But this lone work is quite appealing, and I’m curious about the subject. It would be too easy to dismiss the carnival/fair as sentimental or nostalgic, but the handling of the piece is superb. The cylindrical hub at the center of the ride in the foreground is particularly strong, as it vacillates between warm and cool reflection, while the slight gaps at its seamed and riveted surface impart a malleable organic quality. Metal has never looked so inviting. The pinkish violet and blue modeling in the sky and throughout the background creates atmospheric space, and exudes distinctive warmth over the scene. The more primary red top of the carousel balances the red cars in the foreground, and offer a crisp contrast to the soft tonality. I find this personally engaging and deliberate environment slightly perplexing, as the scene is devoid of human presence. I’m wondering if this absence is intentional, to enhance the mood of collective memory or longing. I hope to see more of your work on the site.
