Curator’s Comments:
Contemplation was posted several years ago, and yet when I come across it in random searches of the site, I find I’m more attracted to it with each additional viewing. The softly tinted blue color and low value contrast provide qualities in the image that impart a stillness that wonderfully offsets the activity of your other pieces on the site. While the unrelenting patterns of Timeline and Thermal Nuclear Family have their own visual appeal and harmony through repetition of marks and small allover shapes, the face of the Buddha carries its own inherent tranquility. The printing on Plexiglas further offers an ephemeral quality to the image, which no doubt has a stronger presence in person when the large scale is also considered. Giving more consideration to the formal disparity in subject matter and composition, I wonder if the allover patterns of the works mentioned are intended to offer a similar (Buddhist) meditation.
