Curator’s Comment:
It’s nice to see new and fresh text based work. (I do realize this post goes back a bit, but it comes up fairly early if searching images by “most popular”. It obviously made a lasting impression.) Unlike many stark conceptual contemporaries employing text, these pieces have a colorful pop influence- graphic, and clean, but not significantly visually removed from current advertising and media. The Circus is Cruel is especially provoking because of the contrasting figurative form. Because of the graphic power and simplicity of the form, there is a desire on the part of the viewer to read both text and shape simultaneously. I’m curious if the warm color in this piece as well as the Gone Local series was intentionally chosen to convey a disputably feminine voice. One could argue the more graphic circle or target shape is genderless rather than feminine, as evidenced by John’s targets and numerals, but I’m nonetheless reading emphasis on hot pinkish tonality and content from a women’s perspective. These are bold, provocative pieces, and leave the viewer with much to contemplate.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
