It probably looks familiar because it was reviewed here months ago.
Thank you for the review.
Curator’s Comments:
This small assemblage looks very familiar- I wonder if I’ve come across it in an actual exhibition, or if the familiarity is just from viewing it on the site? Either way, I’ve appreciated the subtly of contrast and textures in the orchestrated folds; bearing some of the same sophisticated and understated marks in your earlier (Mapping) drawings. The inclusion of what appears to be an actual beetle adds to the delicate sensibility of scientific taxonomy…a specimen pinned for eternity in a shadow box arrangement. Of course the reference to ‘book bug’ and the inclusion of torn pages calls to mind the movement of books into accelerated antiquity in the modern age. Devoid of actual text in this piece, the pages function as open, brittle leaves, asserting a natural organic state to the combined objects. They also intimate wings, counterbalancing the closed form of the insect. I imagine the small physical scale contributes to the mood of quiet, and suggests a preciousness or intimacy in the viewing. I also enjoy the other collage works you have on the site, but for me this piece most beautifully resonates in bridging the found materials and form with layered associations.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
