Curator’s Comment:
Realizing this sculpture series was posted a while back; I only recently stumbled across your bowls and am taken in by the uncomplicated vitality within the graceful sculptural forms. There doesn’t seem to be any attempt to disguise the origin of the environmental/biological materials, and yet the bone and wood begin to blend visually because of the smooth organic surface and natural coloration. The interaction between the elements in this piece is quite dynamic, and the piecing of the vessel by the extended antler is sexually changed in its ying-yang dichotomic tension. The shape of animal antler is sinuous moving along its bleached white tip to the textured pearly base. Disconnected from the living source, the branched formation reminds me of a young tree bough, which theoretically plays up against the wood. I’m wondering if this relationship was intended to provide disparate contrast or complementary synthesis. The inclusion of the animal bone/antlers in the table pieces seems somehow less intimate. I’m actually most attracted to the first table, 4651. The twisted vine beautifully falls along the contour of the wood slab; it’s rough surface accentuating the polished wood and glass. The small hole in the top creates an interesting counterpoint as well, as if the vine missed its mark, but could just have easily slipped into the opening. I’ve very appreciative of the high degree of craft in these works. It seems you have an extraordinary faculty to know when to pull back and embrace the naturally occurring forms.
