2009 Oil, gold point and gold leaf on birch

So much in life is decorative. Appearances are often more important than substance. The mask is a symbol of the facade that is put forth in life. A mask hides your social standing, feelings, dysfunction and most especially your age. The most dangerous masks are the ones worn inside ourselves.

The ethereal qualities of the painting HUSH lighten the visual weight of the decorative embellishment and intricate designs. The faint blending of the tinted blue skyline supports the white masks trailing off the primary red and gold mask. I also appreciate the ribbon-like lines and vines floating through the piece, fluidly connecting clouds and floral elements. The violet cast shadows under the edges of the white cloth (silk scarves?) in the top section are particularly convincing, and provide an interesting foil to the flatter, and more decoratively applied adjacent patterns. This work remains popular despite being created back in 2009. I find it curious to reflect on your thoughts about masks as symbols of facade; the year 2020 makes us reevaluate meaning and intent of masks in an entirely new way.
