Curator’s Comments:
I see My best shirt as a fanciful, spontaneous drawing made tangible. The pose isn’t self-conscious, but captures essential nuance in the ripple of a garment and bend of an arm. I particularly like the way in which the checked shirt appears to break away and gape with the motion of the invisible body. Arguably the piece says more than if the anatomical details were filled in. Existing on roughly human scale, or slightly smaller, the physical presence of the work no doubt inspires human interaction. The empty face nicely removes any movement towards nostalgia or personal sentiment. I also like the related sculptures that appear to be derived from gestural figure drawing for similar reasons. Quick motions pulled out in wire, they maintain a fresh, dynamic movement.
