Curator’s Comments:
I was thrilled to discover your artwork back on the site! Thank you for sharing these new pieces. Your signature style combining figuration and decoration remains clearly recognizable and dynamic. I’m particularly captivated by the new painting entitled Twilight. The headless form loosely presents as a figure, but combined with the graphic patterning, it could also portray a garment. The lines running down the central blue frame aid in the curvilinear movement, and appear to accentuate certain body parts. I’m also intrigued by the repetition of squares with small circular dots in the background space that are arranged on a slight slant. Similar treatments of shapes in your paintings provide ornamental harmony, as if cabochons are punctuating the densely worked space. Forming a figure-ground relationship with shallow depth in this painting, the dots within the squares evoke a crowd of eyes looking at the eyeless/faceless form. The horizontal squiggles emanating from the figure’s midsection may indicate internal forces at work, but the overall abstraction of the image retains mystery. Looking back through your other paintings on the site posted back in 2012, I’m struck by the reemergence of a visual language based on more ambiguous organic forms in this new work. While you posted organic abstractions many years ago, it’s as if the energy surrounding your earlier human portraits have now become the main subject rather than simply residing in the backdrop of another more recognizable life force.
