Curator’s Comments:

I am amused by the lively movement and personal expression in 1No Evil, influenced by the familiar adage.  The repeated pattern of the faces actually serves to blur the identities of the individuals photographed for the benefit of a rhythmic and engaging design.  The smaller images along the borders nicely frame the lower contrasted value pattern within the piece, and contain and unify the various sized blocks.  I think it also helps the piece that the portraits revealing eyes are moved away from the central area of emphasis, allowing the viewer to be guided through the roughly symmetrical arrangement.  Instead of being greeted by a complete face in the center, the open mouths also give entry into the space, and direct elsewhere.  It is highly original and well executed.  Black is Black Ain’t (ongoing series) is perhaps a more challenging group of images to decipher, as the gestural drawings on the bodies imply a superficial humor, but also nag at something deeper underneath. Distinctiveness is reduced down to simple black and white characters , as holding hands suggests the embracement of bi-racial identity. One thinks of tattoos, but as imposed racial signifiers they could carry a weight of demarcation rather than of choice.  I hope you'll continue to post work on the site.
