Curator’s Comments:
Can I second a comment made six years ago? This painterly work is indeed meditative, with its brushy layered surface and lush red glaze on the bottom. The white central form- the abstracted flower- creates a quiet and contemplative center. And yet the slight diagonal tilt of the form offers a shifting movement rather than a steady presence. The broken quality of the stem further acts to offset the compositional stability and predictability. I also particularly like the dark soft edge along the top of the painting, as it breaks up the creamy neutral ground and provides value contrast. It also suggests the idea of a weighty sky overhead. It’s interesting to note that this piece is somewhat of an outlier in your portfolio, among boldly gestural and active works. Perhaps it is partially this singularity in expression that makes it stand out.
