Curator’s Comment:
This is a really wonderful series. The violin becomes anthropomorphized as a figure in these evolutionary works. The cyclical nature of the form breaking apart and coming together is in itself musical in composition, and so I wonder if the sequencing is important. I believe intaglio printmaking in particular embraces these transitional stages, as so the process is attentively married to the imagery. My favorite impression in the group is # 4, as the color seems most analogous to the shapes. The rich black and white textural work in the interior of the bent and swaying instruments seem to attach to ribbons of red and orange on a green field. The solid dark areas towards the bottom help ground all of the movement, and create unity through repetition of the forms rounded bases. The pure black and prints are also very strong- unencumbered by any abrupt transitions of color and edge, which are also inherent in the process if it’s created with an edition in mind.
