Lanterns is a luscious non-objective piece.  The saturated colors are nicely butted against lower chroma tints in what appear to be two contrasting paint layers of fully integrated pigment. The bottom “story”, of organic relationships between smoother yellows and pinks reveal some scumbling of contrasting hues; and then the marks on top are much stronger still in texture and intensity.  I enjoy the formal decision to keep the light source in the value pattern underneath, illuminating the rough patches of brush or knife work.  I also appreciate the openness of the center of the picture plane.  The altered distribution of visual weight gives the bold palette atmospheric space and room to breathe. (Congratulations the sale to the White House!)
