Curator’s Comments:
There is such a large body of these gestural black paintings presented together on the site that it’s easy to take them in as a whole. But on closer inspection, I appreciate the more nuanced areas in each. The piece designed “5” has particularly strong tonal and temperature variations, and I read the cooler blue-grey as reflective light against, and on top of a warmer ground. I appreciate the fluidity of the composition in contrast to the grittier or abraded surfaces in related works. The density of the surface is engaging with the limited color palette. The quick, black scribbled lines layered over the more amorphous shapes also creates an interesting contrast between what could be slower formed surfaces. But it’s also possible I’m reading the slowing down or speaking up of the marks because of the notation about time that accompanies each of these works. Thanks for sharing them. I’m glad I looked more carefully today.
