Curator’s Comments:
Red Wine Goes With This Fish exerts none of the usual angst associated with Expressionism, and instead inserts exuberant color and figural abstraction into a joyful scene. For me it shows a bit of a Pop influence, more in the style of Red Grooms. The flattening of the space is an intriguing stage for the cooking couple; the fish visually connecting to the organically patterned motif swimming on the wall. The broken high chroma color activates each of the objects independently, creating movement through an equalizing of space and emphasis. I like the clever and knowing inclusion of the television set in the kitchen. Echoing the preparation of the figures in the shallow foreground, it also speaks to our contemporary celebrity cooking culture. Sak’s Shoe Salon is another intriguing multiple figure portrait, as it provides a similar astute observation of shopping as a spirited pastime, or contact sport. I suppose that depends on the mindset of the viewer!
