Curator’s Comments:
How could I have missed this? 73-Revolte is an incredible painting- an expressively humanistic approach to political turmoil. I appreciate the dominant, almost oppressive use of the color red in the top of the composition. While it clearly depicts a flag or banner with insignia, it also forms a forceful entity through its saturation and placement in the picture. The figures appear to be engaged in a combination of smoke-filled protest and celebration, while the crouching figure in the foreground gestures as if on a phone. The implications of this gesture make the piece both contemporary, while giving the viewer a snapshot of being in a singular frozen movement rather than within a contrived or posed scene. There’s enough definition in the articulated bodies to make them individuals, but of course the beauty of the abstraction is that it could be any one of us. I’m so happy to have come across this painting randomly on the site today. Most of your other pieces appear to explore formal relationships rather than political or social content; the drawings referencing AIDS monument’s notwithstanding, are less overt. 73-Revolte carries a tremendous emotional punch. Please do consider posting some of your new work to the site.
