Curator’s Comment:

(7-)Grind suggests a utilitarian entity with its sharp toothed neck, rivets, and wheeled bottom.  I see a certain truth in materials, as no attempt seems to have been made by the maker to disguise or embellish its construction.  The piece has distinct aesthetic warmth, perhaps due to the brown coloration, but it could also be perceived as threatening because of the aforementioned teeth, and pointed sculptural symmetry.   Physical dimensions aren’t indicated, but I do sense the piece is on a human scale, further enhancing the understanding of its purpose to be task oriented, or at least hand held.  I also find (1-) Rocker to be very appealing.  It suggests more of a found object quality, because of the aged patina in the materials.  But there is also a more dynamic tension due to its less stable curvilinear bottom.  The intentionality of these works is quite intriguing.  There’s attention to craft and materials, and certainly honed design; but there’s an ambiguity of purpose that ultimately leaves the viewer unsettled.
