A ballet of Violence. Muay Thai is an old martial art Thai form originating in the Buddhist Temples (Wats). Depending on the expertise of the fighters it can be a graceful or brutal art form.

Curator’s Comments:
The painting Muay Thai came up today and I was drawn into the active, hot red scene. Your accompanying text wonderfully describes the martial art as a seductively violent activity. The power and grace of the figures vibrate with saturated color and agitated line work. The ropes of the fight ring running horizontally through the composition add nice contrasting visual elements, as they emphasize the opposing diagonal movements of the figures in action. Anonymity, and therefore universality of the figures is preserved as their faces are turned away from us. While this is a specific fight at a specific moment, it expands in time and place. It’s a beautifully expressive work. But as I looked through the rest of your images on the site to see if this was part of a series, I was taken by the stylistic range in your paintings, from this very gestural image to a more graphic, almost cartoon style. The subject’s range from representational to almost completely non-objective is also quite impressive.
