Mixed media on canvas. 45.7 cm x 61 cm. Entry and participant the 2010 WSKG (NY Public TV) Competition and 6 NY City Tour.Private collection. This scene is peaceful, except for the sounds of the birds, the wind in the trees, and the babbling of the brook. A place of my childhood thoughts. A place to escape where only the distant bark of a dog or an occasional sound of an airplane breaks the wonderful silence found in this idyllic country setting. The texture of the cold wax and oil paint speaks to the sensuality of the technique. The purity of the color is reminiscent of the Impressionist as it softly envelops your view and your mind.

While A Bucolic Autumn Day may be out of season for the end of May, I was attracting to this painting, which looked to contain a floral garden from the smaller thumbnail.  I actually appreciate it more on a larger view, where I can see the manipulation of the textural impasto surface.   The allover broken color lends itself to association with the Impressionists or course, but the piece has a decidedly more contemporary feel.  The intense color in the background reverses what would normally be expected with atmospheric perspective, and surprises the viewer as the tree line pushes forward. It is an inviting, but intense landscape with hot primary red and complementary green hues.  I like the sole brown log that sits in the grass in the bottom of the piece, anchoring the space and forming a counterpoint to the weighty curve of the brook.  The gentle bend of the horizon also softens the contrasting edge, as if the landscape is slightly rising up and wrapping around our vision.
