Curator’s Comments:
Honey reappeared in a random selection of images on the site, despite the fact that it was posted many years ago. The graphic nature of the elements drew me in for a closer look today, and it was then that I remembered admiring and commenting on the companion painting entitled Light. In the context of Light and other works, Honey appears to be a close-up section of a larger expanse. Works such as Cool River and Giovanni in fact appear to contain the same designs within more open space. But here, the cropping of curvilinear forms and bold brushstrokes allow the viewer to appreciate the economy of line within the gestural handling of form. Small fissures and brushy color break up the smooth contours and create visual interest. I don’t think I would have made an association between the black and white striped shape and bumblebees even with the title, until I revisited Broken Wing, with its similar yellow and black patterning. But now it’s difficult for me to view these buoyantly paintings as purely non-objective designs, and I search out familiar relationships in nature. Considering that all of these works were shared many years ago, I do hope you will consider updating your work to the site.
