Curator’s Comment:

Nuna is a captivating image, as the stylization of the figure’s proportions calls to mind ancient Venus fertility amulets with swollen breasts and bellies, and tiny feet.  The ochre and red earthen pigments further reinforce the primal association with early fetish imagery.  Despite these strong visual aspects, the painting also has a contemporary flavor, as the tilted head and expression of the figure is pensive, and perhaps introspective.   I like that she fills the space in the picture plane, and that the modeled background floats in and out of the shape contours. The open value pattern keeps the figure-ground relationship of the same spirit. I admit to having a strong preference for your figurative works, which wield an emotional and reflective impact through the nostalgic abstraction. While the somber cityscapes may share a certain loneliness with the human figures, the sense of place may not be as specific as the internal human condition for some viewers to fully embrace.
