I integrated texture into the gesso creating a more diverse surface in which to play with the paint. This oil is 16" x 12" and is a first where I play a bit with pattern.

Curator’s Comments:

I positively respond to your slight shift in direction and experimentation in this new piece, A question of balance. The build up of a textured ground adds complexity and visual interest to the broader, open fields of color, while the patterned sections slow down the visual movement in the composition even more.  I’m particularly drawn to the lower/central area, with what appears to be topographic patterns and repetition of smaller forms.  The hues and the shapes themselves echo the larger compartmentalization, creating micro-macrocosm relationships in the painting. More broadly speaking, the alternating bands of orange and blue complementary colors provide a satisfying abstraction. Thanks for sharing this new work.
