Curator’s Comment:
The title of the larger portfolio Violent Humors really suits this individual image. There’s a ghastly twisting of the mouth that denotes death and decay, all the while displaying this gorgeous array of visceral, broken color. The pink and red ground adds a surreal vibrancy to the subject, whose head floats and fills up the better part of the visual field. The background also contributes some solid geometry to the otherwise organic modulation of the fish head. The title of this specific work- A Speaker, seems to cast further irony in that the frozen mouth is deemed forever mute. Your more abstract untitled works as well as the painting entitled Metamorphosis are even less restrained in color and vibrating gestural energy. Patterns of red and blue threaded through the primary yellow help organize an otherwise chaotic space. Interestingly, despite an undecipherable subject matter the piece still employs a conventional figure-ground relationship. I see the lighter, lower chroma brushstrokes along the edges as providing a structural background for the more animated and saturated marks. These are really beautifully developed watercolors- thank you for sharing them.
