Curator’s Comments:

Ancient Chimes positively evokes eroded surfaces with a gorgeous amber patina from age and wear.  But I don’t know that I share the opinion of the painting to be Expressionistic- while stylistically very abstract, it has a still quality that denies personal gestural expression and individual encroachment.  The artist’s painterly hand is subdued in favor of dramatic shadow and luminescent reflection. I particularly like the pale blue-green and orange highlights in middle of the composition.  There’s a metallic heaviness to the darker articulated areas of shadow above and below the highlighted sections, which ground the otherwise amorphous objects. The cropping of the painting also suggests its part of a larger scene; a close up piece of primarily organic forms that remove individualistic markers of time or cultural origin. In other words, I’m attracted to this piece for its purely visual properties, and what’s not provided keeps me looking longer.
