Dear Curator,
thx so much for your in depth analysis :-)
Actually, for the centerpiece (the eggyolk and the leafy area) I used Carpaints in spraybottles... just like graffiti.
Curator’s Comments:
These radial works have an amazing design presence- Flowerbomb in particular attracts with a bold diagrammatic appeal, and then rewards the viewer upon closer inspection. From the original thumbnail view the center piece is reminiscent of a bright yellow-orange egg yolk for me; plastic and almost spherical in form. But the white highlights and stippled red detailing actually look rough by comparison to the pale iridescent leaf shape immediately surrounding it. The simulated red wood-graining on the larger petals add yet another layer of contrasting texture to the smoother blue background. These elements work well together and feed off one another visually despite their disparate surface treatments and color palette. I am curious about the mixing of media. The red grain pattern makes sense to me as a relief print, but I’m wondering why you chose to identity the pigment/process as graffiti, since it has a relatively controlled rather than linear and gestural system of mark making. I’m glad you included the installation shots of several of these pieces- even reading the dimensions next to the works don’t do them justice in the same way we appreciate the comparison of human scale.
