Inks and metalics

Curator’s Comments:
This untitled piece employs the same exuberant “abundance” as the previously titled work, with even more dissolution of form through textural ornamentation. It reminds me a bit of Chis Ofili’s extravagant figural abstractions with ethically inspired inclusions. But this untitled work also strikes me as intentionally-archetypically- feminine in its use of color and floral motif. The central figuration is difficult to discern completely from the ground. I read it as an abstract face breaking into a lacey pattern which is then enveloped further by another decorative border. The symmetry of the piece anchors all of the busy work, and creates an enticing rhythm within the blurred figure-ground connection. I don’t see the inks as metallic colored on my monitor but imagine that the reflective gold may reference icons or other celestial deities. But I recognize my interpretation may be skewed by the spatial proximity of this painting next to the sublime Bodhisattva, Abundance.
