Curator’s Comments:
Manipulated in a rather straightforward manner, I find the effect of this image quite compelling. The exchange of the silhouetted white figures is both animated and eerily frozen. (like a Robert Longo piece from the 80’s) I like that the vignette of full color space and value is slightly off kilter- pushing the balance of the space into a more dynamic, asymmetrical equilibrium. The dark green and gray architectural elements help to contain and define the space, and could suggest barriers within the subjects’ conversation. This is also enhanced by the inclusion of the third, less engaged figure on the left. The alternating angle of the trio further pushes the visual direction of the focal points; we naturally follow their gaze. Titled within the Allentown Fair cache, I don’t know that anything else besides formal relationships are being explored. Many of the other photographs in the series appear to document exuberant scenes, as well as the mundane. Perhaps this is where the two overlap.
