Curator’s Comments:
Coming up in a random search, I’ve previously viewed your sculptures some time ago but may have not given full attention to your expressive paintings. I still find it interesting that they share the same kind of marks and line, and yet layering of color takes place in the two-dimensional works that isn’t possible in the 3rd dimension. Conversely, economic of form is somewhat sacrificed in the painting. I’d be curious to hear how you feel these two approaches or media interact. I’m most drawn now to Amblew in Gyre. As the title possibly refers to ocean currents, I’m viewing the typographic +’s and o’s as geologic in their origin/orientation. The red and blue dynamic creates vivid and dramatic temperature shifts in the palette, and offers a strong physicality to the strata in pigment. I also enjoy how the white textures and shapes appear to be additively incorporated into the work, as they’re setting on top of dense color, rather than appearing as negative space. I do hope you continue to add more work to the site. It would be nice to see how these works evolve.
