Curator’s Comments:
Despite the relatively modest dimensions noted, Atomic Winter looks to be a substantial sculptural piece. Part of its allure for me comes from viewing the simultaneity of image and object. The painterly surface successfully contrasts the irregular exterior shape. As the painted imagery doesn’t follow the exterior confines of the form it also doesn’t present as superficial decoration, but as a visual exchange. I like the bold red solid shapes, which emphasize a biomorphic hierarchy in the overall design. The smaller drips and textural elements are supportive features without appearing extraneous or overly ornamental, while the dark background also helps to organize the lines and brighter color. I believe this analogous system works well in containing the expressive marks, and calls to mind astrological formations.
