Thank you very much for this insightful feedback on some of my work. I really appreciate this! :-)
Curator’s Comment:
I’m really drawn to this piece. Pineapple is a robust, wonderfully nuanced and deceptively simple print. I especially like the combination of litho wash with the more definitive line work. The expressive lines in the pineapple’s surface are twisted, calligraphic and yet at the same time build up contrasted areas of tonal hatching. I also enjoy how it protrudes into space- the cropping of the top virtually obscures its subject recognition. The dark amorphous shapes in the top left counterbalances the abstracted cast shadow below. I usually dislike obvious signatures on artwork, but what looks to be a stylized signature/chop mark elegantly balances the rendered form. Your piece entitled Pinetree seed shares a similarly interesting interaction between dramatic mark making and flattened areas of space. I’m attracted to several of your tondo works as well for your strong use of color, but because of their radial balance they don’t seem to possess the complex play of linear pattern against a more irresolute edge.
