Curator’s Comments:

While the landscapes with the blackish sky and pristine white ground arguably present a more transformative landscape, I’m particularly drawn to this picture.  The value reversal in the rust-brown filled grooves is a beautiful contrast to the fresh snow.  The earthy warm tones also form a strong visual divergence from the blue sky, and tree lined horizon.  The feathery textures in the distance soften the graphic contrast of the cross contoured lines, while presenting a still scene. I imagine this series of photographs was taken purely for their formal relationships, which are quite strong.  But I’m also reminded of the revered Stieglitz photograph Hand of Man made during the early Industrial Revolution, and wonder if the juxtaposition of the tracks against the land says something about mans’ presence in nature.
