Curator’s Comment:
I love the irony of this little piece. The preciousness of its scale and complexity is a wonderful foil to the ubiquitous studio subject. It exhibits a sparkling presence with its reflective details and candy red ground. I also find it sardonically humorous that the only area that reveals it to be hand painted is the actual lettering on the label- from the smoothly softened cast shadows to the chalky white cap. It really is a little jewel of a painting. Your entire body of work exhibits a masterful stylistic realism, seemingly only slightly modified by subjectivity towards the subjects. Many of your works appear to be faithful translations of photographs, from the frozen action (in paintings like Girls Night Out and Michael Phelps) to the alternating formal posing (Jordan Order and Boston Family). But I am most attracted to the pieces entitled Spinning the Web and Make Mine a Double, as they exhibit a similar wry look at the very practice and tradition of art making itself, and are intelligently referential paintings for painters.
