Curator’s Comments:
I marvel at this piece, Bird Dreaming, along with the rest of your works that pulsate with bright tension between forces within the natural world. The deep red ground of this image appears to be an outlier in your generally more tinted color palate, but it’s the perfect foil to the lemon-yellow bird feathers and tenuously stretched thin lines between them. The positioning of the plucked dandelion flower serves as a punctuation mark above the larger bird’s head, intensifying her thoughts. Combined with the tree in the bottom right and thin yellow threads, the objects present as totems or talisman, rather than natural objects in the landscape. Because of these visual contrasts, the bird’s “dream” is rather startling. The viewer is presented with an austere space, and disjointed bodies in connection. I should also say I find the piece quite beautiful, and vaguely tragic. There is no safe space for the bird to land, or place where she can awake from her deep dream. As this work was created many years ago, I hope you consider sharing new work to the site.
