Curator’s Comments:
I enjoyed looking through the series Architectural Abstractions recently, even though they were created some time ago. The dynamic tectonic relationships express wonderfully complex (or impossible) engineering feats, within a bright, Pop sensibility. The piece enumerated # 3 is particularly pleasing. The red projection zig zags back on itself in the composition, suggesting an extended walkway above a self-contained cityscape. The gridded rooftop design echoes the square window shapes within the architectural forms, creating visual harmony among the saturated colored patterns. The scale of the actual piece was a surprise- when I originally viewed these works I envisioned them as digital graphics, rather than paintings on shaped supports. The clean, hard edged image reveals the elimination of artist’s brushstrokes, and must have a dramatic presence as a smoothly painted object. I’m curious about your background, and the essential roles architecture and draftsmanship play in your studio practice.
