Curator’s Comments:
I’m fascinated by the resilient gestural physicality of the marks contained within the confined square of Atlantis. While scale and media aren’t identified in this piece, some of the larger marks look as though they possess sculptural properties, and cast shadows against the smoother ground. The color also sets up a dynamic interface between creamy whites in the thick, broken pieces on top and the wispier cool white brushstrokes underneath. I interpret the small hot red fragments as floating on top of the lighter blue; some trailing faint tints of their intense hue. Red Fruits interestingly highlights this color temperature disparity, and metaphorically calls to mind a ripened reward or yield through pigmentation. But the extreme abstraction of the form could also fall into purely painterly composition. Whether actual ‘fruit’ or simply red shapes, they successfully ground the more freely expressed and intuitive features.
