Katherine,
Thank you for your compliment and painting is on one piece of silk.
Kristen, Thank you very much for your wonderful review!
Curator’s Comment:
The last Autumn Red Tree beautifully captures the luminous glowing red in the heavy clumps of leaves, while keeping the rest of the space calm and delicate as a counterbalance. The open airy sections of white, light blue and pale yellow also serve as a welcome visual rest. They give the piece an overall feeling of intricate delicacy- capturing a fragile moment of natural splendor and transition. I also really like how the open light areas are staggered through the vertical movement from top to bottom, allowing me to float effortlessly through the space. The edges of the individual dyed silk shapes are constructed like stained glass, but without relying heavily on the linear contours. Balboa Park is conversely a work of unusual and unexpected contrast, unlike the subtle staccato of Autumn Red. It’s cooler color palette and dark shades in the negative space conjure a more fanatical environment than the natural landscape. The ballooned tree shapes appear faintly aquatic, and are reminiscent of jellyfish or horseshoe crabs; their linear spines crossing through the subtle burst of color wash. But the architectural element in the bottom section brings them back to solid earth, and representational space. These are really nice pieces- thanks for sharing them.
