Curator’s Comments:
I found Birdcage enjoyable but surprising when it came up on the site, as it’s a large scale painting quite unlike most of your other pieces. The representational nature of the subjects and startling contrast of scale creates a fantastically surreal landscape. I enjoy the bright colors of the birds and sky reflected in the windows of the monochromatic buildings; the bits of blue woven throughout the work create visual unity and a jarring sense of light. The somewhat anthropomorphic birds may reveal we are all in fact caged by a dreary urban setting, but perhaps this is too literal a reading of the curious juxtaposition. I also want to echo the positive comments made (several years ago, it would seem) about your more abstracted work Tower. The organic patterning of the background does suggest droplets of water for me as well, adding cool movement to the stationary ‘tower’. The title evokes a human-made signaling structure, but I also read it as a growing organic form. It has a figural quality, which actually may be related to The Lounge Singer. In any case, I enjoy these multifaceted approaches, and hope you continue to post new work on the site.
