Curator’s Comments:
Bag Lady; Kicking Out Sexism is a dynamic wall piece with sculptural qualities. Within the body of work there’s an astute manipulation of ubiquitous material, using paper bags as metaphor. I particularly enjoy the gesture of this figure, as the silhouetted pose embodies rebellious action. Yet her falling position is simultaneously one of vulnerability and weakness. The convoluted organic shapes within the contours of her body also imply organic composure from assembled chaos. After recognizing the circular shapes as crumbled paper bags, I imagine assemblage from household items. The bags are simple and unpretentious, but could also conjure ideas about consumption and disposability. The portraits on individual opened/standing bags are also unassumingly powerful. The surface infuses the subjects with familiarity and fragility. The viewer is rewarded with narrative text for coming in for a closer look, but the printed font easily reconciles our experience with advertisement on consumer bags. This is very provocative work, and I hope to see more of it on the site.
