Curator's Comments:
The sultry and hazy air of summer is palpable in this work aptly titled Beach With Children. I appreciate the slight abstraction created in the skillful handling of the figures through gesture and color blocking. Anatomically, the viewer immediately understands the family of bodies on the beach, while individual limbs get blurred within the overlapping edges. The adult woman’s gaze to the horizon is also instantly familiar- scanning for children in the water and sand. The aqua blue sky beautifully balances the warm brown tones moving between the beach goers and ground. Thin sepia edges outline other elements in the landscape, reading as both exposed underpainting, and formal connection between shapes. Looking back through your other paintings on the site, I remember admiring and commenting on other pieces than had a similarly pleasing intermingling of Classical form and expressive mark-making. In all of the ocean scenes, the viewer is positioned among the swimmers and sunbathers. While these pieces were made many years ago, they remain fresh and engaging. I do hope you consider sharing new works to the site, if you are still able to do so.
