Curator’s Comments:
Factoryscape Dusk is a gorgeous painting of a subject that for most is somewhat bleak or depressing. Coming up in a random search of images, I was attracted to the contrast in the subtly modeled sky and stark contrast in the bottom section with the smokestacks. The pale blue clouds in the top of the piece speckled with brown nicely breaks into rippled waves, and counters the solid colors and values elsewhere in the piece. The wavering heights of the stacks have a stoic, architectural presence, forming figurative totems elegantly moving along the horizontal picture plane. I enjoy the slick, reflective ground that is also skillfully manipulated with the wax medium. The result is an alluring space that could come from a mundane urban landscape anywhere in the country. I agree with Julie Keller that it's hauntingly beautiful.
this is so emotive, disturbing and hauntingly beautiful
