Curator’s Comments:
The dreamy Spheres of Influence transmits a vaguely political narrative along with its surreal landscapes. The glass bubbles/bottles appear to contain liquid reflections rather than encapsulations of complete urban scenes, although the latter is just as likely within the fantastical space. It also occurs to me the same scene is repeated in different spatial perspectives, as in a time lapsed transmission. The full cumulous clouds provide a lush background with pinkish hues peeking through the blue sky. In visual contrast, while levitating in the clouds the spheres actually hold a lofty weight; perhaps the weight of the world. But the title plays on the viewers’ perceptions of authority and control, or at least the persuasive sway of influence. It also reminds us the untethered spheres are only beholden to themselves. Either way, it’s a pleasure to look at, as well as contemplate conceptually.
