Thank you for your comments.
I think what really scares me sometimes is how technology and media images seem to replace human interaction and become an embodiment of an ideal (heaven).
Much of my work explores this concept.
Curator’s Comment:
Bible TV Special…is a very amusing image whose outrageous satire initially overshadows the skilled rendering. I like the screen faced ‘televangel’ escorting a zealous believer from their floating couch across a carpet in the sky. The aerial view of the small tract houses suggests an acerbic indictment against conventional thinking, either institutionalized or suburbanite. High chroma hues of red and blue in the supernatural scene- and the Super-man, accentuates the separation between the cosmic event and the mundane neighborhood below. The humorous textual references to kitschy popular culture, from “Pink” track pants to the upward looking cherubs effectively fit into the narrative. But if the viewer still doesn’t get the joke, the sign with Bang! provides a graphic punch line.
The vanita paintings are only slightly less subtle, but equally as deft in their stylized realism. Vanitas 1 obviously shows the peril of attaching ourselves to technological devices. But the dual skulls, incongruously canine, don’t warn of the loss of human interaction. Because of the beautiful handling of texture and color, the book becomes an ironically antiquated focal point. Seeming plucked right from a 17c. oil painting, it provides a jarring visual contrast to the slick surface of the mouse and flowing cord. These are highly enjoyable pieces, and I look forward to seeing more of your paintings on the site.
