Curator’s Comments:
Brothers came up randomly on the site today, and I really enjoy the enigmatic quality of the figures against the starkly divided background. The linking of their bodies, along with the title, suggests a universal bond or parable. The warm sepia tones of their skin merge visually with the earthy ground- making the men more connected to the landscape. The verdant green treetops and blue sky are curiously separate- more so than what would be expected in a local color scheme. My read into this division is the figures& ground represent an axis mundi- where the earth meets the sky in a spiritual divide. In that context, the bottom man pushes his brother up into the heavens by carrying his weight on his shoulders. It’s a very interesting piece to contemplate.
