Curator’s Comments:
I think I like the detail shots of your sculptures more than the actual images that show the pieces in their entirety- there’s something really interesting that happens when the sprawling elements fill the picture plane in an uneven and unpredictable manner. And yet the regularity of interval between branch and bud in the sculpture entitled Black n’ Red fundamentally intrigues me. There’s a strong tension between nature and artificiality in these works; playing off the expectation of what a living branch produces. The coloration of Black n’ Red makes no attempt to reproduce or construct a facsimile of the natural product. It instead celebrates the plasticity of materials- there’s a subtle humor in this straight forward assertion. The detail photograph also highlights the purity of the primary red paint and clean metal rod, while suggesting a form that moves on forever. When seen as a whole, the viewer paradoxically understands this branch is a piece of a larger whole- but a whole tree that was perhaps, and likely, never created.
