Curator’s Comments:
Black Tulip offers a good deal of visual subtlety within your array of higher contrast floral work. I’m glad for the encouragement to view it independently when it appeared randomly on the site today, so that it wasn’t overlooked. The beauty of the piece partially stems from the areas that aren’t actually black- creating a diaphanous bloom, rather than opaque purple-black flower. While the medium isn’t indicated, it does appear to be a polarization of a black and white photograph. I detect faint pixelation on my monitor, and so I wonder if this was a darkroom generated picture, or manipulated digitally. The decision to leave the background space pure white further lends delicacy to the isolated subject. While I have admired your lush and colorful figurative abstractions in the past, Black Tulip offers surprising restraint. If it represents another direction in your practice, I do hope you post more images on the site.
