Curator’s Comments:
I respond to the lush painterly expression in Life Force, and the interesting ways in which the brushwork creates ambiguous interior spaces. The changing directionality of the marks suggests passageways and openings, particularly in the central portion of the composition. Low chroma hues offset more intense color here, allowing for visual rest and complexity, while the dramatic temperature shifts in blue and red-orange hues add to the mystery of the image. The elongations of the non-objective pieces titled Fluidity are also quite pleasurable, though they appear to have more direct movement. The sweeping gesture of the second Fluidity is nicely interrupted by the striated bands of complementary colors on the right, and pale blue block on the left. All three works nicely speak to the primacy of the painting process.
