Curator’s Comments:
Considering all of the possibilities with digital photographic manipulation available, it’s striking to see this image created as a straight digital shot. The abrupt layering of geometric and organic shapes is interesting, and vaguely unsettling. The alternating natural and artificial light sources are a thought provoking juxtaposition in the piece, suggesting opposing environmental forces in play. I enjoy the split frame of cool, more vibrant color at the top of the piece, and a murkier blurred imagery balancing the bottom. The inclusion of an ordinary object such as the kitchen stove further lends itself to a read that combines the profane with the sublime. On the surface this image has little to share with your mixed media analog paintings and collage, but I understand the permutations of shape and rapid changes in color boundaries and directionality as visually congruent with many of your other works.
